BNE-SFO or ADL-SFO would seem to have more availability. Virgin domestic legs can be obtained quite cheaply. I switched to SFO-BNE last year prior to Christmas to get the upgrade, and then paid for a domestic ticket BNE-SYD.
Note need to catch a bus landside between domestic and international terminal in BNE. Not a huge deal as they run frequently.
