I wouldn't want people messing with my jacket either at least. But accordingly, I follow the rules and keep it with me on the jacket hook, or under the seat in front. Or if there is space in the bag compartment, I put it in the narrow space on top of my bag where it won't take volume away from others.

If all else fails because I am in an exit or front row, I keep it on my legs until an FA offers to deal with it.
