I ended up applying the GUC to the LAX-AKL flight. However, I am waitlisted for PS since there isn't any availability to confirm in PS. I asked the agent that if PS is to be completely full on the flight, but there are still D1 seats, would I be able to bypass PS and go straight into D1. I've been told the exact same thing as well. I believe what is supposed to happen is you get waitlisted for DPS. Hopefully, someone will clear out of DPS into D1 at T-24h, at which point you will clear into DPS. At that point, you should get waitlisted for D1. All that said, I have never actually seen it work like that, because I have always managed to find a flight where I can clear into DPS at booking.
