While I am not a window person, I do understand the importance of a true window for some and can see their disappointment for infrequent fliers. (I have an up coming trip with separate tickets on three domestic carriers and trying to find common information is different for each)
But my motto on things like this,
Once, shame on them (airlines)
Twice, shame on me
Three times or more , as in this case, does not sound on the up and up
Back in the day, reserving a window seat that turned out not to have a window would have been nothing more than a disappointment. The airlines made clear that seat reservations were not guaranteed. We weren't paying for that seat reservation, and we couldn't fairly complain if for some reason the airline switched us out of it.
What's very different now is that airlines are charging substantial money for seat reservations -- $50 or more. I think it's crazy to charge that kind of money for a window seat that is not next to a window.
