I probably average 125-140 nights a year across HH (LTD) and Marriott (Ambassador) and probably average $300 a night (Expensive places mostly) for the last few years. I started my journey at Hilton's probably in like 2000 with the old 50K for 4 stays days (anyone else remember the GLONP awards!) so I am a long long timer there with a Mutual Fund HH account. Moved most of my stays to Marriott once I hit LTD.
There are parts of Marriott that I much prefer, but it is harder to earn points. The late-checkout is a huge plus (Nevermind YOUR24 which is also very good), the suite upgrade success is still (2.5 years into my moving most business to Marriott) shocking to me. I get upgraded so often at Marriotts that I now am bemused when I don't, and I end up in a regular room. Some of the suites have been really amazing too. Lounge access is better in the US I found for Marriott than for Hilton - but both are fine for my travel patterns.
I am in wait and see mode here, but if they start doing better about suite upgrades, and checkouts even if it's 'award' based, like an AA SWU or something - it'd consider moving back some more of my business. Though if the requirement is 80 nights, I may need to now finish off lifetime with Marriott before I move most stays back.
