It was never supposed to help your upgrade position. Anecdotally, it might still do that, but seemingly only if you have the upgrade request in place before you do the cash buy-up, and only if you end up in O/A/R, as opposed to RN. People who buy-up first are generally reporting being unable to waitlist an MUA or PlusPoints after that. YMMV.
