Largely pleased with one annoyance
Staying at the hotel now for two nights. As everyone says, it's a great property, beautiful in every way though it's time to slightly refresh the bathrooms. The rumored renovation will likely make this hotel magnificent.
The staff at the hotel are really great. The housekeepers are pleasant and work hard. The service is very high level.
I only have one annoyance. I had forgotten the whole Imperial room/lounge access question and booked a non-Imperial room which was upgraded to a non-Imperial with a view. They explained no lounge access at check-in and that was fine.
After one night, I decided I might like lounge access and asked if I could pay to upgrade. The clerk initially said I would have to move rooms. I said I didn't want to move but would pay.
After hemming and hawing, and asking the boss in the other room she stated they would make a one-time exception for 180 Euros. I was willing to pay that much. (I know some of you will disagree about that, but I was). However, the process made me feel as if I was cheating somehow in their minds. I didn't like being made to feel that way, especially at 180 Euros a night, so I refused the lounge access .
I realize some might disagree or wouldn't have the same reaction I had. However, as a guest at a nice hotel, I don't appreciate being made to feel disrespected, which I did here.
Next time I will book an Imperial room or stay elsewhere. I'm also have good status with Intercontinental and I receive very good treatment there, so that's likely to be my go-to.
In the end, I wish to emphasize that but for this bit of distastefulness in my mind, this is a fine hotel.
