Sorry for going over all ground but the options are
Move 788s down, fleet size works well, J and W cabins work well LGW wise but M is far too small for LGW and the 788 is the perfect aircraft at LHR to ‘test’ new and thinner routes.
newer 772s. But would need to pay to refit 12 or more airframes at significant cost to get just a few more years out of the airframe. Remember when BA refitted the LGW birds it was done as a need to compete with the then Norwegian 788s BA said that although the fuel burn was greater on the 772 the densification put its fuel burn on a par with the 788s (relative fuel burn as a cost) and also these were done around 2018/19 when they had a good ten years left in them.
A350s, no way.
773s, again need to refit them and they work well from LHR big J cabins akin to the old High J 744s
Brand new A350s, apart from the fact we are sceptical of new aircraft at LGW this makes most logical sense. Have them with dedicated LGW configs, not need to worry about LGW LH for 25/30 years, greater reliability. Range wise I think the -10 can handle BKK and MRU can they not? I know it’s a stretch but I’m not in the know enough to know if they can handle it but would be at risk of limitations? And experts on this in the chat or 787 pilots who can shed more light on this?
At worst I think someone said up thread IF these two routes can’t work on the -10 they could be some route movement to LHR and bring routes down with lesser range.
With BA heading to a fleet of 80 787 Dreamliners we have to get increasingly used to 787 being the answer to our Qs!
Only four B772s might cling on to life after 2031 - the ones delivered in 2009. Moving A350s to Gatwick is possible but creates issues and I think is unlikely unless BA decide to split Gatwick between A350 and B78X routes …. Unlikely but intriguing
