I approached the gate agent and asked if flight was under gate control and she said no. It was a domestic flight and > 30 minutes from (re)scheduled departure and < 30 minutes from original scheduled departure (flight was delayed).

My (probably) faulty memory was I thought I could change seats until the last minute and maybe even after I boarded the plane. From others who know better, likely I was wrong.
