U is the redemption class for a business class ticket on BA. You will not be able to upgrade this with a GUF. You should have been able to upgrade your WT+ ticket to Club though as a GUF will book either into I class for business or U redemption class. If U was available for the POUG you booked, I would also have thought it was available for your GUF.
