When my wife and I went to Santiago a few years ago with our kids, we took their certified birth certificates because of the information posted with the state department. We were never asked for them. I have read elsewhere that if you are traveling alone with your children you could be asked but not if both parents are there. Also if the family name on the passport differs, then that could result in a request to see the birth certificate.
