Dear BA Flyertalkers,
I’d really appreciate your advice and will lay everything out before asking my questions.
Both Mrs C (GfL) and I are Gold. We currently hold a GUF2, expiring at the end of March 2026. We’ve just used most of our Avios on a long-planned trip to the Seychelles with Qatar Airways, so we’re now down to under 40,000 Avios. We also have a couple of Amex 2-4-1 vouchers available.
I’m an IHG Diamond member, so we would expect room or suite upgrades and lounge access where available.
Our grandson turns 8 in two days. He’s very inquisitive, especially with anything historical, so we’d love to take him to Cairo for a week during the February half term. The plan is to visit the Pyramids, Sphinx and other historical sites, and ideally stay at one of the InterContinentals in Cairo. If a suite isn’t available, we’d be happy with a room that has a sofa bed.
My tentative flight plan is to buy economy tickets for Mrs C and me, then use the GUF2 to upgrade both to Club Europe. We would book our seats in the last row of Club and place our grandson in the first row of economy. I may swap seats with him during the flight. I’m not sure of current child fares, as it’s been a while since I’ve booked one, so it might even be reasonable to book him in Club as well—happy to be corrected.
My questions are:
- Is this plan sensible, or would you suggest a better way to use the GUF2, Avios or 2-4-1 vouchers?
- Any tips on booking strategy for Cairo in half term with low Avios?
- Are the Cairo InterContinental properties family-friendly, and are suite upgrades likely?
- Any other practical advice when travelling Club with a child seated separately?
Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
