Walked up to the gate and said there appears to be one seat in First available. Were you planning on giving it to one of us or #3 on the waitlist? The junior gate agent looked somewhat puzzled and said we’ll get back to you in 25 minutes, at which time she informed us all seats were taken.

People board and get seated. Just before the door closes, the senior agent walks down the aisle and asks which one of you is getting the seat? My wife is comfortable in her Premium seat leaning her head against the wall for a nap with the window positioned just right. I embark upon the imposition of the heavy burden.
