She said I needed to have the physical card (which I have been trying not to carry because it is obnoxiously thick in my wallet). Do I need the physical credit card to get in Alaska Lounge or is there another way?
Yes, that's correct, you need the physical card. This is also outlined on the AS website: https://www.alaskaair.com/content/ai...cies-and-rules
Complimentary access for all Citi Executive Primary Cardholders who present current physical card. (Authorized users not included in complimentary access to Alaska Lounges.)
The AS site notes AC members (non-card) and CKs can use a digital card, matching your experience.

Personally I just tossed the card in my briefcase since the only time it was ever swiped was at clubs and that bag is with me on nearly every flight. (I agree on detesting the uselessly thick metal cards. FWIW I got Chase years ago to swap the metal card with a normal plastic one. Worth asking if Citi would do that if helpful for you; since it's not in my wallet and Citi CS is hard to deal with, I never tried that with the Exec)
