I thought the example was an $800 hotel booking with a $300 credit - which now that I think about it would be 3200 potential points (4x, not 3x..used to the old math), but since you used the credit, you’d only get 2000 points ($500 remaining at 4x).
So while it is correct that to totally optimize you’re better off using the $300 credit for 1x travel spend and not direct air/hotel, it isn’t as bad as it was implied (that you lose the remainder of the points earning on spend).
You would also have to hold off on any air/hotel travel bookings until you use up the $300 credit. Not sure how feasible and certainly adds unnecessary complexities.
