The Elmhurst gas tanks were removed between 1996 and 2001. I watched them go from the Expressway Visual 31. Though sometimes coming down from BOS around VALRE we'd get the beloved "right turn" into 31, instead of overflying LGA, left down the Hudson, left over the tanks, left at the Kew Garden interchange. Great memories of pre-2001 when I could see that from the pointy end of a 727!
