Many pilots like to pick up extra flying to earn more money. When not enough pick up the open trips, the company can offer extra compensation for specific trips to incentivize more to pick them up. They can also reschedule pilots from one flight to another to fill in holes. They can "move" a trip from one base to another by adding deadhead legs at the beginning and the end of the trip.
