In addition, mileage balance matters a lot. Miles are a depreciating asset, if you have hundreds of thousands of miles sitting around, it makes sense to use them at "worse" cpm redemptions. I used 20k miles per person for J flights from SJD home. Flights were wide open, likely would have gotten upgraded on a 12k Y fare, or could have bought it for $500 each , but 40k miles when I have a bunch is a better redemption than spending $1000.
