I think the OP would have probably mentioned if exceptional circumstances applied; to me, this sounds like a simple change of mind (even if due to non-exceptional circumstances outside the OP's control). From the OP's few earlier posts, Erich's home airport appears to be Vienna and my guess is that he is travelling to Larnaca, so it wouldn't seem like the ticket was issued in the US
(Given that the OP previously was posting only about using a VIE-ATH-LCA trip to achieve Silver status, I wonder if the recent changes to the programme are the reason he has decided to forego Silver ;-) )
