I do have to agree that the JAL first meal service takes way too long (if you're closer to the back of the cabin). The CA spends a lot of time with each customer, so it could take hours before they get to the back. It is probably part of their training to provide omotenashi, but in my last flight, it took them 2 hours to get to my seat to take my order for the main meal. While taking my order, the CA tried to strike a conversation by starting with "Is this your first time visiting Japan?". Honestly, that was quite annoying (I've flown with them >100 times over the past 5 years), because it was clear she was just asking that to everyone. But out of courtesy I still tried to keep the conversation going, and we had a 5-10 min chat that I wasn't even enjoying. It also felt wrong because there were still more passengers behind me that were not served and waiting.
The way to go about this issue is just to select a seat as far front as possible. If you seat in the first row of J class, you will be served first, and your meal will be over in 1.5h after takeoff. I've been in 1A multiple times (in planes without F class) and had excellent experiences. Once I finished my meal and looked around the cabin, the CA was taking orders at Row 4 or 5. So yeah, I was finished but another passenger hasn't even ordered. I don't know if they find this an issue, or they think it's fine since the flight is >10 hours.
With all said I would still fly JAL over AA any day if the price is the same. The quality of the food is just leaps and bounds better. The cabin cleanliness is also far superior. The only thing is that AA flights tend to be cheaper and a large price difference could tip the balance.
