I am a UK and Irish national. I use either passport for API but the details the airline has does not matter to Border Force. So in your example, I would enter Poland with a Polish passport and enter the UK with a UK passport. The Border Force officer would prefer it this way, and won't care what API you submitted. Keep both in your pocket and you will be fine.
