Unless I am mistaken after reviewing several threads here, if you cannot make a flight BA will neither refund nor retain the funds for future use - they confiscate them unless you pay a hefty fee to rebook another time and pay the fare difference.
Alaska puts your funds into a wallet for future use. AA holds them as flight or trip credits.
My very limited experience is I had an operational change of flights with BA on a non-refundable ticket which completely screwed me over. They refunded me entirely. And in all honesty, it was only £150 so no great loss if they hadn’t. Maybe I got lucky? 🤷♂️
