Because the value of status is outside of the lounge benefits at the home airport. It is lounge at other airports, extra luggage on other airlines, seat choices on other airlines, etc ....

This is delusion. Most of their customer do not care. Certainly not their most loyal. People here (including me) who are using A3 as an easy way to get *G are not their loyal customer.
