Yes, there are some workarounds that may allow people to extend them beyond their expiration date. But UA could close that loophole at any moment, and they'd be perfectly within their rights to do so. I certainly wouldn't bet on it for less-than-once-a-year travelers.

Incidentally, you might also scroll back a couple of posts, as there are multiple reports of the inability to use FFCs for more than one person on the same reservation.
