The last time I booked a Skymiles award (Fall 2022) I flew DCA-DTW-MUC/MUC-AMS-DTW-DCA with all flights on DL except MUC-AMS on KLM. I could have returned MUC-DTW-DCA on DL, but the flight via AMS departed later in the day, at a better time for me.
We are getting into the weeds here as routing rules and inventory availability on awards do not necessarily match those of revenue fares. Another big difference is that you can book awards for travel within other regions which you can't do with revenue fares as cabotage restrictions do not apply to these.
