Can you book using AF to a different airport in Germany? Would STR, Cologne-Bonn or even MUC be close enough to FRA in view of your plans for travel within Germany?
CGN and maybe even DUS are about a 2 hour train ride to FRA but STR is a bit far and MUC is way far away.
Interestingly, I recently booked a MCO-BER Skymiles award reservation and was hoping to use Delta's AMS flight as the connecting point. Nope, would only sell me AF via CDG in both directions.
