It is always interesting that Delta rates high on customer service surveys that are given nationally, but then on a day to day basis thry have average to very poor customer service at Delta. This seems to be normal to have agents saying the bins are full, then after boarding there is plenty of space.

I had a really rude FA tell me I had to gate check after the gate agent told me to board with the bag. I got to the door and the FA said you must gate check as bins are full. I said the gate agent said I could bring the carry on. She said no so I gate checked it. I was at the end of boarding and then sat in First. She was surprised. I looked up and said look there was plenty of space right above my seat. She assumed I had a basic economy ticket or was a low revenue flyer. She apologized to me after takeoff. Really rude employees at Delta and many U.S. airlines lately.
