I'm well aware that you can get away with it, but over the past few years, even though I always HUCA to make the upgrade request for the return one-way, I have had several GS phone agents call me out and deny it. Even had one add a note to the second ticket referencing the first. United could decide at any time to search for instances of these and issue warnings or take away status, so I just gave up on doing it in 2024.
