I asked how to learn the "official" cause for a cancellation a few months ago, the experts here including JJeffrey directed me to:

AA.com has a form for this though. AA.com > Contact American > Trip Insurance Verification. Fill out your details and they should send you the official delay reason.

It worked like a champ for me.
