I had never either until yesterday on a DL A350 from SEA-ICN. I was maybe the 3rd or 4th pax to board so easily got my roller bag in a bin above my seat (3A) but the lack of bins over the middle seats was noticeable. Every bin over the window seats became jam packed and I think a few late arrivals had to find space elsewhere. I’m actually thinking about checking in my bag for the return (I usually do anyway, but didn’t want to risk an agent not through-checking on a long 7 hr connection outbound).

Usually I’m on A330-3/9 for D1 and never recall the issue I saw yesterday.
