If you piece a routing together segment by segment UA will price it by segment (at a higher cost). If you put in origin and destination it will price that way and you can choose which of the routing options you want from what is displayed. But if what you really want is available in inventory but not displayed you are SOL. Yes, it sucks. UA changed to the O/D method quite a while back. What is described above, trying after travel starts, is likely your nly hope here.
