Upgrade pecking order question.

LAX-BOS booked in Main Cabin Classic on X fare.
Will be Platinum two weeks before flying and will likely be able to upgrade to C+ then. (Gold currently)
Currently offered relatively cheap upgrade to C+ for 9500 SMs.

Would I be higher on the D1 upgrade pecking order if I upgrade now using the miles or when I get the comped Platinum upgrade? Or does it not make any difference?
