It's "here."
TU has a writeup
https://www.tourismupdate.com/articl...s-eta-platform
South Africa’s electronic travel authorisation (ETA) portal (eta.dha.gov.za) has gone live as part of the
first phase of its eventual rollout to all visa-requiring countries.
The ETA platform has opened for G20 delegates from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico entering via OR Tambo and Cape Town international airports.
If the system proves stable, access will be expanded to all travellers from the same four countries
and then to all visa-requiring markets globally from 2026 onwards.
Emphasis added.
As lest you think visa-exempt is "off the hook" (so to speak), there's this little tidbit from TU (which is also mentioned in the FAQs).
Additionally, the Department of Home Affairs says it is exploring the “most seamless and appropriate way to also obtain biometrics from
visa-exempt travellers”.
Again, emphasis added.
Been away and a little busy. Gonna see what, if anything, can glean from the site. But, I have a LOT of questions: you have to create an account (is that for a family or one traveler, what about kids), what about kids coming in, what's the fee, how seamless is the payment going to work (looking at you Vodacom app using an offshore credit card), where's the carrot in this - expedited clearance at the border (similar to US CPB's Global Entry). Those are just a few starting points.
One other thing is why are they "testing" it with G20 delegates from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico. Not specifically those countries or the G20 but why are they only doing it with ppl who are likely (a) pretty sophisticated international travelers who won't have questions/issues/etc. and point out flaws in the system and (b) may be diplomatic passports and thus are not the "real" types of travelers they're rolling this system out for. Nobody asked me. But why not do it with limited origin/destination flights and possibly even work with one or two specific inbound airlines to test it all out.
I'd also suggest a Q&A checkbox/drop down menu system whereby you say "I am on X country passport", "I have / don't have a visa to enter SA" "I am coming for business, pleasure, +/-90 days" "I am coming into X or Y SA airport" etc etc and then you can say "bingo - you need ETA" or "nope you need a Visa, don't bother with ETA until you have a Visa" or "not yet cowboy, we'll get to you in the future for ETA but for now, come to SA and stand in a queue at JNB, CPT or DUR"
