The irony here is it is a one way non stop flight, it is not like there is a complex calculation. AA have acknowledged I was downgraded from LHR to CLT due to an aircraft swap. They are not disputing the facts of the case, just the amount of compensation due.
If all else fails, there is a fantastic thread on the BA board about how to claim UK261 compensation and what to do if improperly rejected (it focuses on BA but the what to do after you've been rejected part works for anyone). Look for posts in particular by a poster named corporate-wage-slave He is very helpful.
