50K status for a friend would normally only be good for this year BUT by choosing it this year, AC has stated that it will roll over to next year as well. After that you can only choose this once you hit 130,000 SQC.
Mostly gone as of January and earned as you spend instead.
Don't choose a nominee until you need to use the benefit - that gives you flexibility. The choice normally expires early the following year.
