The NUA process is subject to a number of seemingly random IT errors which result in some form of upgrade denial. Just adds to the perception that NUA are "worthless" (they're not, but it sure can feel that way).
They haven't been worthless for me. I rarely have any that go unused. I just look at this as a challenge to outsmart Marriott. You can be sure that I'll be checking all my reservations going forward.
