It wouldn’t surprise me if BA is actually selling all available First seats anyway at the moment. There are currently plenty of travellers with plenty of cash, fed up of poor service in lower classes and buying up for something perceived better.
Agree it is a lot of Avios. I have just booked LHR-SFO in First for next summer for a family of four using this method, so 800K Avios one way plus taxes but I will lose Gold in April and will never have it again so once in a lifetime opportunity. Plus I had a stash of Avios I needed to burn before BA devalue them.
