I just received my Summit and started with the purchase of a JAL Biz ticket to BKK in Dec. That alone will lock in my spend threshold. Here's my question;

When you get 3x for "International Purchase" does a purchase from an international carrier qualify ? Or do you have to be situated overseas when the card is charged to qualify ?
I'm curious what the leverage will be on each dollar/mile when traveling internationally, and this would have a major gearing effect. I tried to purchase the route
from the Alaska website but it didn't show any JAL, only Phillipines and a mash up of Korean and Cathay. I tried other dates and JAL never popped up to BKK.
I would have booked JAL regardless of status implications (OW vs *A) since it has the best schedules from Hi.
