I view the Amex Plat card as a coupon book. If you have the time to make sure you maximize the all the rebates it's a decent option. The lounge access and points are basically a bonus. Unfortunately with UA's recent reduction in releasing I space, it's not much use for flying on UA. However I've had pretty good value using points on other partners.
Appreciate that view and agree. United has reduced all real benefits of being an elite member. Once I hit 2MM, hopefully in next year or so, i'm pulling up chaulks and going free lance. If I travel to Asia I wanna use miles/points on Singapore, for example. I don't want to be held to United and *A which are increasingly harder to redeem on.
