have you never flown a CRJ? This is NOT new.
yes, a backpack with normal load will fit, certainly a purse.
Also, at some airports, specific jet bridge has space for a luggage bin to allow passengers to drop off their larger carryon due to limited overhead space.
And, CRJ500s have special luggage bins behind fist class affixed to the floor.
