My understanding of the reasons for having both GE and RR 777's at Gatwick is that the RR 777 have bunks for crew rest, so are needed for the longer routes, the GE don't, so cant be used for routes such as Mauritius and Bangkok.
Maybe not for J passengers where the layout is the same, but this two type mini-fleet policy bit us a few years ago in Y where we had the extra leg room seats on a GE plane booked for months going to Aruba, then a few days before put an RR plane on it and rejigged the seats so we ended up losing the legroom seats. If you're on a route that requires crew rest then your guaranteed a YMM RR frame, but the routes that don't must suffer some seat reallocations, and so frustrations.
One standard fleet would eliminate these last minute changes
