BA EuroFlyer versus EZY

We flew recently LGW-SVQ with BA and back with EZY. We don’t take that many short haul flights, and are usually on mileage in CE, but this time we had family visiting and were all at the back of the bus.

I just don’t know why anyone would prefer BA in short haul economy over EZY out of LGW.
  • BA plane was 18 years old and felt like it (my seat pocket was hanging off); EZY just 2 years old.
  • EZY crew were remarkably proactive in helping people find overhead locker space; constant announcements; rearranging to maximise capacity; closing bins when full. BA staff nowhere to be seen during boarding.
  • It took the BA crew 1h 30m from wheels up to complete the High Life Cafe, because of course half the crew was busy in CE. EZY had done the whole cabin within 50 mins of take off and came through again - twice - to see if anyone wanted anything additional.
  • While service was happening access to the rear toilets on BA was blocked to an increasing part of the ET cabin, as the trolley made its way down. It was a completely full flight and not possible for the crew to let people pass. Remarkably this was a well-trained passenger group and no one seemed to breach the curtain to use the front toilet. When finally the aisle was clear a queue of maybe 10 people formed for the remainder of the flight. The crew were clearly irked by this and kept trying to make people move out of their way.
  • EZY felt so much calmer as passengers could see both toilet options; time the queue; and not line up down the aisle.
  • Finally I know crews vary randomly, but the EZY crew was young and super friendly, the BA crew rather more functional. And I certainly didn’t get any recognition as a GCH

So, I usually enjoy my CE flights and appreciate the space, food and (usually) protected toilet up front. But if I were a regular economy passenger I would absolutely prefer the open cabin, egalitarian access to toilets and cabin crew efficiency of EZY. It just felt like we were all in the same “boat” metaphorically; no one was getting better service or preferential rights to pee; the entire crew had one task, to get everyone a coffee or snack; and everything just works better as a result! (If you’re behind the BA curtain that it.)
