This is not at all surprising, but disappointing nonetheless. That place is way too small, and installing some of those crappy cafeteria tables they have in YVR might increase capacity slightly, but they need more space.
Granted, I only recently went to the YUL Café for the first time, after the MLL had closed, but it's not that big. It may take the edge off slightly, but the Café would need to be 2-3x the size to make much of a difference.
The big Starbucks style tables are great for capacity, but not a lounge. The way they are packing people into the lounges makes some of them far less comfortable - having been in the Aspire/Amex lounge in YUL a couple of times, it has a much nicer "feel" to it, even when full. The seating isn't quite packed in like sardines. Maybe not realistic for AC the way they've been pushing lounge access, but certainly nice.
