Personally, I prefer to go to the side and inform staff that I'm Group 0 if I arrive before boarding commences. That way, unless it's a special case, I can join the pre-group.
Furthermore, gate staff receive briefings beforehand on the number of passengers per group for that flight, and If Group 0 is existing on that flight, they pay a bit more attention. Theoretically…
Of course, in reality, many staff don't actually do that…
but Personally, I think Heathrow T5 is still reasonably well maintained...
