I actually hold both Platinum cards. The Flying Blue Platinum (had it since 2005, in every version from Silver up to Platinum) and the regular Amex Platinum.

The FB card is my main one for everyday spend; the 1.5 miles/€ and 2 miles/€ on AF/KLM still make sense for me, and the Platinum for 2 benefit is a real lock-in since my wife uses the status perks but doesn’t fly enough to keep Gold or Platinum herself.

This year I decided to finally try the regular Platinum. Same dilemma as you. I’d always skipped it because I wasn’t eligible for the SUB. I applied without one, only to later discover many people did get the bonus despite already holding a card from the other line. Still frustrates me. That’s 100k MR missed.

That’s now my leverage with Amex. I love Privium (especially the lounges), but since I mainly fly AF/KLM, the standard KLM lounges already cover me. Privium’s fast-track is nice when I’m traveling with my wife, less so with colleagues.

Still, I have to admit both cards together create a solid ecosystem. Especially if you’re deep into AF/KLM. In that sense, Amex did a brilliant job positioning both cards to complement each other.

But... I’ll likely cancel the regular Platinum unless they make it worthwhile. Either a strong retention offer or a full fee waiver. The price is just too steep now (€65/month + €10 for the extra card). After 20 years with Amex, high annual spend, and both my wife and kids holding FB Amex cards through me, I think I’ve earned some negotiation room.
