In any case, as you are arriving at T2 where there are no hotels, you need to take the SkyTrain or the inter-terminal shuttle to T1 anyhow if you don't take a cab/rideshare. From T1, you might as well take the S-Bahn to the HP. It's arguably a shorter walk than to the Hilton and at most marginally longer than to the Marriott/Sheraton. Since you will be taking the S-Bahn at around 9 PM, crowding should not be an issue.
The entry to the HP is about 30 m = 40 ft from the S-Bahn station and the S-Bahn station at "Gateway Gardens" where the HP is located has both elevators and escalators. You'd need to buy 4 short-distance tickets for you and your family (two at the reduced rate). It's EUR 2.35 a ticket per adult, EUR 1.65 per child.
If you are gonna pass on the HP (and other Gateway Garden hotels), you might as well take a cab towards Niederrad. If going for something like the DoubleTree, the lower room rate (as compared to Marriott/Sheraton/airport Hilton) should more than offset the cab fare.
Even though a taxi driver may be displeased with that short trip, as you say he/she is obligated to accept the transport and in my experience they will. With that bulky luggage and a small kid in the evening I‘d recommend going straight for a cab at T2.
