You'll likely have to spend more than 5k to book a flight award (exact figure depends on which city you redeem to), and then rely on CX to refund you the miles after you cancel your ticket.
I personally haven't heard about the booking-then-cancel method no longer being a feasible way to buy some more time before expiration. Wonder what happens to the miles after you cancel an award ticket if it is indeed true.
