Please do recall several years ago when an idiotic AA pilot left the seatbelt sign on for the entire duration of a LHR-ORD. Directed all customers to stay seated. Some disobeyed, and thanks (!!!) graciously reported the PIC to the FAA and American Airlines, resulting in his suspension.
I don't disagree with you about the "boy who cried wolf" thing, at all. Neverthrless, I find myself... questioning... the datapoint of an AA pilot being suspended for leaving a seatbelt sign on.
