I have done it a few times just for extra space. I checked in and just put my passport details in for the extra seat booking . Printed off BP and told them at check in and again at the gate. Good idea to tell the gate agent before boarding commences. Have done it with BA EI FR and Jet2. No issues at all.

I'll check-in online and repeat my own passport details for the extra seat. I'm likely to use self-service bag drop for the outbound flight from DUB so I'm not sure if there'll be easy access to any staff to let them know at check-in. I'll let the gate agent know though. Bag drop will be at a manned desk on the way home so I can let them know there as well as at the gate.
