12/31 isn't some huge holiday that everyone flies on, especially when it falls midweek (Wednesday) like this year. I'm guessing you'll find things relatively quiet.

Unless you just want to get to Rome a day earlier, then IMO it makes no sense to change to fly through PHL on 12/30. You're way overthinking things here.
